Earth Day: Summit plants over 450 trees per year.

April 18, 2019

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 every year to support environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, is coordinated by the Earth Day Network and recognized by more than 193-countries around the world. One of its major initiatives is to plant more than seven-billion trees by its 50th anniversary in 2020.

Trees are very important to our environment - they help combat climate change, provide habitat and food for birds and other animals, and release oxygen for us to live. In fact, in one year, an acre of mature trees can provide enough oxygen for 18-people.

As a Kansas City home builder, we want to protect our environment and build healthy homes and communities. We guarantee for every home we build, we will plant two (or more!) trees. And in every community we develop, we will plant over 30 trees. In the last year, Summit has planted over 450 trees across the metro. Our goal is to reach over 500 trees in the next year. We believe home is where the health is.

Want to make a difference? Here are 5 ways to make a difference on Earth Day.

1- Use alternative transportation: Look at alternative transportation, such as carpooling, walking, biking, or busing around town will save energy. And since Earth Day falls on a Monday, it’s the perfect opportunity to find the best walk, bike, or bus route to and from work.

2- Start a garden: It's not too late! Plant organic, local produce, plants, and TREES. April is a ripe time for planting and growing crops into the rest of spring and summer.

3- Try to go without electricity: See how long you can go without electricity with your family. Unplug the TV, shut down the computers, and have a family board game night while the sun is still out. Even if it’s just for one hour, the practice is also a good way to see how you might be wasting electricity without knowing.

4- Reduce Waste: This is a big one. Recycle, start a compost pile, donated household items and clothing. Find new ways to rid your home of these items while keeping them out of our landfills.

5- Conserve Water: Turn off the water while shaving, brushing your teeth or washing your face. Turning off the tap can save up to 2,400 gallons of water per year.

We believe that together, we can make a difference in our community and the way we live. Interested in learning more about Summit and our homes? Call or text Ashley at 816-326-2909.
