Lumber companies donate to charitable home during a time of shortage

October 12, 2020

The United States is seeing a major shortage of lumber as a fallout from the stay at home order and other Covid-related shutdowns. After the six to eight week shut down, the housing marketing came roaring back. As a result lumber prices have surged more than 170% since April. For a home builder, this means an increase in home prices and a big ask our lumber companies to not only still supply the materials for the Raising Hope KC charitable home, but to donate it at zero cost.

Owen Lumber, a local Lee's Summit business and Summit trade partner, provided materials such as OSB, a joist for the deck, cedar posts and additional framing materials as needed. They partnered with Louisiana Pacific (LP), Weyerhaeuser, and Simpson Strong-tie for the siding and subfloor.

84 Lumber, another valued Summit trade partner, supplied all of the studs and plates. The home is currently under construction and in the framing stage. In years past, a home of this size for a base lumber package would have cost an estimated $30,000 and because of the shortage, the donation total from these vendors and suppliers is about $55,000.

The Raising Hope KC home is set to be complete in March 2021 and all proceeds will be donated to Hope Haven of Cass County. Hope Haven exists to provide safe shelter, concentrated supportive services, community resources, and education to survivors of domestic and sexual violence in the Kansas City metro.
