Managing Indoor Humidity During the Summer Months
August 29, 2025
As the summer season brings higher outdoor humidity, it’s not uncommon to see indoor humidity levels in the range of 60%. This is normal and common for homes in our region, especially during extended periods of hot, humid weather.
Rest assured—your home was built to meet or exceed local building codes, including those related to ventilation and insulation. However, maintaining ideal indoor conditions requires ongoing homeowner awareness and seasonal upkeep. Below are some helpful tips to reduce and control indoor humidity during the summer:
Homeowner Tips for Reducing Indoor Humidity
- Set your thermostat to a cooler temperature.
A cooler AC setting not only lowers air temperature but also helps dehumidify the indoor air. - Use exhaust fans regularly.
Run kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans during and after cooking or bathing to vent excess moisture outside. Utilizing bath fans even more often can serve as a simple line of defense. - Introduce a dehumidifier.
In particularly humid areas of the home (like basements or rooms without much airflow), a dehumidifier can help maintain a balanced humidity level. - Keep windows and doors properly sealed.
Annual maintenance to reseal around doors, windows, and attic access points helps prevent warm, humid air from seeping into your home. - Avoid leaving windows open.
Even during cooler evenings, open windows can allow moisture-laden air to enter and raise indoor humidity levels. - Replace HVAC filters regularly.
Clean filters improve airflow and help your HVAC system work more efficiently to regulate both temperature and humidity.
