Why You Should Go Green

Plant life has been a trend in design for years, because it brings life to the space. As a designer for Summit, one of our jobs is making our homes feel inviting, comfortable, and a reflection of the way people like to live. When we work with a design for a space it’s never an issue of deciding whether the space should include plant life, but rather which plants are right for the space, the environment and the person. One decision is choosing between real or faux plants. Faux plants these days look and feel so real, that they are no longer a faux pa to have in the home.

There are so many reasons to include plant life in every room of your home, including your actual health! Beyond their aesthetic value, having plants in your home:

  • Reduces toxins in the air
  • Improves air quality
  • Different plant varieties can add textures and colors

Go Big or Go Small: It’s Up to You!

One of the best things about plants is the versatility that they offer on terms of scale. They can be small enough to accent a tiny desk, windowsill, or open shelving. Or they can be large enough to need floor space of their own. If you have a room that has too little green or an empty space, a floor plant could be just the right thing in scale and color!  Our go-to plants right, now faux or real are; succulents, snake plants, fig trees, cactus and ferns.

Real or Faux?

It’s great to start off with a faux plant, and work it into a room and space, then as you grow to love it, decide to take the leap and buy real! If you want real, go to a greenhouse, hardware store or your local grocery store to get a great variety. But if you’re looking for easy and want faux, here are our favorite buys right now:

  • Home Goods
  • At Home
  • Target
  • Ikea

Plants and flowers alike give you a sense of liveliness for your room, a bouquet of flowers can range from $10-$50+ per week, so investing in plants can give you that same feel and not at a reoccurring cost.

Plant Life

At Summit Homes we decorate with plants daily. When we stage a home we want it to feel like you could walk right in and live there. Also, we love the color green and the aesthetic it adds to our homes! When you are choosing the right plant for your space remember the following:

  • Scale: do I want a large statement plant, or just a small one for a side table or shelf.
  • How is the lighting in my space, can I go real or faux?
  • How much care can I give this plant? Does it need frequent watering?
