A Homeowner story

August 29, 2019

Summit Homes is dedicated to building and supporting strong communities in Kansas City. We contribute time and resources to charitable endeavors focused on empowering communities and helping children and those who are unable to help themselves. It is our privilege and our responsibility to support organizations that are making a remarkable difference. With that in mind, Summit partnered with Children's Mercy to build the first ever Home for Little Heroes. This home was made possible by the premier network of trade partners and local sponsors that came together to donate labor, material and services to cover 100% of the cost of the home. In return, Summit was able give all proceeds from the home's sale to the hospital. In July, Summit Homes presented a check to Children’s Mercy for $686,018!

Six months prior, another family, Greg and Ashlynn Stiles welcomed their second little girl, Aria, on December 2, 2018. As soon as Aria was born, they knew that something was wrong. She had a small hole in her heart, which eventually closed on its on, but instead of getting better, Aria was having trouble breathing and wouldn’t eat. She went through 2 platelet transfusions, was on oxygen and a feeding tube. They found out she had ecoli in her bloodstream and was septic because of a UTI that had gone unnoticed.

After spending three weeks in the hospital, on Christmas day, the Stiles requested to be transferred to Children’s Mercy because they knew they would be able to better serve Aria's needs. Genetic testing showed she also had Nuerofibermatiosis (NF1) and kidney issues. She was put on a daily dose of antibiotics and slowly made progress to eat and breath on her own. After 6 weeks, the family was discharged to go home.

Aria’s mom, Ashlynn, said, “She has so much against her, but she is such a happy baby. We are thankful everyday that she is healthy.”

In March, the family decided to start looking for a new home. They quickly decided on the Summit Homes exclusive community of North Park Village in Lee’s Summit and instead of buying a move-in ready home, they built. They broke ground in June on their new Estes Park floor plan.

"A few days later we saw that Summit had given money to Children’s Mercy, so for us, it was a full-circle moment. We will spend the rest of our lives paying for the extra care Aria needs. It’s a good feeling to live in a Summit Home knowing they support a cause that is so close to our family,” explained Greg Stiles, Aria’s father.

Children’s Mercy relies on support from the community, where a gift may help patients and families find the answers they need. For more than 120 years, Children's Mercy has opened its doors to children in need. Their world-class child-centered approach and family-centered care is offered through their hospitals, research institute, student training, outpatient clinics and urgent care centers.

You too can proudly support their mission as they care for the health and well-being of the smallest members of the community.
