How Helix Micro-Rebar makes your home safer, greener and more affordable
November 16, 2015
It’s stronger, it’s faster, and it weathers the test of time better. Helix twisted steel micro rebar (TSMR) is a game-changing technology for the construction industry, and one we are excited to incorporate into our homebuilding process to make our homes safer, greener and more affordable for families in Kansas City.
What is Helix micro-rebar and how does it work?
Helix micro rebar is a replacement for traditional steel reinforcing bars used in concrete foundations. Currently, most new home foundations are made from concrete poured over a carefully engineered network of steel reinforcing bars (rebar). While these foundations are strong, their construction is a labor-intensive and time-consuming process. Helix micro rebar are small filaments of carbon steel wire coated in electroplated zinc and cut to 25 mm length. The filaments are mixed in with the concrete which is then poured into the foundations forms, which no longer need a traditional rebar network because the necessary reinforcement is provided by the filaments.
What advantages does Helix micro-rebar offer?
Unlike traditional rebar, which only goes in a few directions, Helix micro rebar filaments provide almost infinite multidirectional reinforcement that increases shear strength, adds durability and impact resistance to the concrete. Traditional rebar is a continuous network of reinforcement, meaning if one area is affected by corrosion, it can affect other portions of the foundation. Helix micro rebar is a discontinuous system, making it safer and less susceptible to corrosion. Additionally, its zinc coating allows it to resist rusting three times longer than standard rebar. Concrete reinforced with Helix micro-rebar is poured into a foundation form in The Manor at Stoney Creek. Contractors follow the same procedures used to pour concrete over a traditional rebar system.
All foundations crack – it’s an unavoidable side effect of variable weather and the nature of the materials used. Though cracking usually does not impact the structural integrity of the foundation, it can be unattractive. Helix micro rebar is designed to keep cracks tight and short, allowing the concrete to micro crack as necessary but preventing the development of a unsightly larger cracks. Helix micro rebar is made from 50% recycled steel and uses less overall weight in steel, reducing environmental impacts associated with its shipment and installation. The use of Helix micro rebar makes foundation construction faster and safer, reducing the time and labor needed to place and inspect traditional rebar and minimizing the risk of injuries associated with rebar. Reduced labor and safety concern keeps construction costs down and allows us to deliver homes to families faster and more affordably. To learn more about TSMR, visit the HELIX™ website.
