Top 3 things to do this summer in Des Moines

July 6, 2021

Looking for something fun to do this summer in Des Moines? We found the top 3 things to add your list!

Saylorville Lake

First off, nothing is better in the summer than a day at the lake! Saylorville Lake is a popular spot in Des Moines. It's the perfect place to swim, picnic, fish, or stroll.  Rent a pontoon, kayak, or paddleboard and enjoy your day on the water. Saylorville Lake is located on the Des Moines river and has over 26,000 acres of woods, water, and prairie habitats.

Farmers Market

Take a lazy Saturday morning and hit up a Farmers market. There are numerous markets throughout the Greater Des Moines area that offer high quality handmade and locally grown products. For example, the Uptown Ankeny Farmers Market has a variety of products including fresh seasonal produce, homemade baked goods, specialty food items, perennial plants, and handcrafts all under a covered pavilion. You can help support more than 100 Iowa entrepreneurs as you shop at the Downtown Farmers Market or Global Greens is sponsoring a farmers market that brings locally-grown produce right to you. This market helps former refugees sell their products and supports small farming businesses.

High Trestle Trail

It's summer, get outside and go exploring! The High Trestle Trail is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the weather and views. This trail stretches over 25 miles and passes through five cities: Woodward, Madrid, Slater, Ankeny and Sheldahl. The High Trestle Trail is known as the "rail trail"; it's an old railroad line that has been converted into a multi-use trail! The main attraction is the High Trestle Trail Bridge located between Woodward and Madrid. The trail crosses over this 1/2-mile, 13-story high bridge over the Des Moines River valley. It is one of the largest trail bridges in the world that comes to life at night with illuminating blue lights along the steel structure.
