From our Designer, Angela, on decorating with neutrals.

February 10, 2020

Neutral colors for interior design are more popular than ever! Neutral rooms are classic, cozy and never go out of style. Decorating with neutrals might seem safe and simple, but be careful because it could easily get boring.

In our recent models, we’ve added pops of color with varying shades of white to create the perfect neutral pallet. For example, a soft hue of green (seen here on the island) makes a beautiful combination with whites, light wood tones, blacks, and golds.

What is considered a neutral color? Neutral colors don’t show up on the color wheel. These colors include all shades of white, beige, grey, taupe, and creamy ivories. Neutral colors tend to be calming, soft, subtle and blend effortlessly with other colors. When decorating with a neutral color scheme you have a blank canvas to add color and texture so that it doesn’t become bland and boring.

When decorating with neutrals here are some key design elements to avoid any mistakes:
1. Add Texture. Texture comes in so many different forms and you really cannot have too many! In this home we’ve used texture several ways to create interest. In the entry, we have natural elements of tree branches/twigs as artwork on the walls. The shiplap in two different areas also creates textural interest. In the living room, we hung baskets on the wall, added a throw on the sofa, and layered on the pillows for texture.

2. Layer. Layering creates depth and warmth in a space! We’ve layered lots of soft pillows and blankets in the living room, not necessarily bringing in any more colors. Also, above the fireplace, we’ve layered a mirror with a piece of art with interesting text/phrases made of wood and layered with a vase and brought the same natural elements of twigs from the entry to create continuity. In one of our master bedrooms, we created a cozy space you would want to call home with layers of pillows and bedding.

3. Add Architectural details. This can also take your neutral pallet to the next level! They grab your attention without a bold color scheme. Here we add classic wainscoting in this entry for that extra pop. We love to add mirrors to our neutral spaces to reflect light and add an extra element of interest. Small framed metal mirrors are all the rage right now, and you can see we’ve added several to our spaces!

4. Don't forget about the exterior. Of course, we can’t close this without talking a little about neutral exteriors, which is very popular right now. We love a classic white home with white trim, and to warm it up a bit add cedar beams to the porch!

Do the same with the outside that you did on the inside. Add textures in layers with plants, pots, rugs, chairs, and pillows! This will add interest to your home and create that same cozy feeling from the inside on the outside.
